An Exciting Discoveries of Technology to Learn Language

Technology has made a very interesting language lesson as I have learnt in class at previous meeting of technology of language learning (TLL). We learn about technology to teach listening and technology to teach speaking. Based on what I learnt in this course, at 1970s listening is considered as the main component in language learning. The focus is learner’s listening comprehension. It is support by Krashen’s hypothesis. There are five hypothesis, acquisition learning hypothesis, monitor hypothesis, natural order hypothesis, input hypothesis, and affective filter hypothesis. The approaches of listening skill are natural approach and total physical respond.
There are some examples of technology that use to teach listening at natural approach, Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening lab, British Council- Learn English: Song and Lyrics, etc. I like the site, especially on British Council. I want to introduce the site to my young brother. I am sure that he will like it. Then, TPR has some examples too, there are TPR game, Live Action English Interactive, etc. Natural approach was development by Krashen and Terrel, whereas TPR was development by Asher.
And then, one example for technology that use to teach speaking is schMOOze University, it’s like chatting and the students can communicate with many people from the other country. Beside it, there are some examples for teaching pronunciation skill, one of the examples is English pronunciation/listening exercise (Okagana University College, canada). In that site, the students can learn how to produce some sounds in English like th, ch, etc. I think it can help the learner of second language acquisition, especially for us as candidate of English teacher. In my opinion, the people will be more interested to learn language if use that technology because many people in the world like technology. I hope that there will be more interesting discoveries about the technology to learn a second language.
Sophisticated in Language Learning

This is the third week I learnt Technology of Language Teaching (TLL). We learnt about MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) and CALL. Actually, now education is more sophisticated than before. MALL and CALL are some of the new evolutions in technology for education. Example of CALL is glogster. In glogster we can put video, photo, and text that related to language learning. We must make the content become interested, accurate, and comprehensible. Beside it, we must make a good visual design and make multimedia with high quality. I think it would be fun to learn by using glogster and it can help me to explore my creativity. Then the other is about MALL.
Based on my lectures explained before, that MALL uses technologies such as cell phone, PDAs, and iPods. Based on an article that I have read before, each technology has some benefit. The first is benefit from cell phone. The teacher can use SMS to sending vocabulary word, idiom, definition about something that relate to language learning, can sending vocabulary practice via email on cell phone, etc. The other example is if the teacher cannot come to the class because something happen, the teacher can contact the students. It can be easier to teacher and students to communicate each other. Because I think almost all of students in the world have cell phone.
The second is benefit from PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants). The students can use PDAs as translation. Beside it, the students can use PDAs not only in the classroom but can use in the outside of classroom to do learning program, because PDAs can use wireless. If we compare PDAs with cell phone, the students can do chatting on PDAs, but in cannot do on cell phone.
The last is the benefit from iPods. I think iPods very support in language learning. It is because iPods have some application for language learning. In iPods there is downloadable language translation software or and electronic phrasebook. Many benefit that can we get from iPods, for example on the article students in Spanish used iPods to submit audio assignments, record audio journal, respond to verbal quizzes, etc. Especially now iPods has podcasting. It is combining between iPod and broadcasting.
All of the statements in above are evidence that now language learning is sophisticated. And then, it’s very interesting for me, because as a teacher candidate I think I must updating technological developments.

Technology in Language Teaching

Education is one of the most important tools needed to shape a new generation. School is one place that used to pursue education. Many methods were used to teaching. Now, technology has also been used in teaching methods. Many teachers use it in class to teach their students. They use their creativity to make their students interested. It is because average of students like technology. They always keep up with technology. In fact the social networks that are now being famous like Facebook, twitter, even most of user are students. So, in class technology of language learning we discuss about how to use Google, YouTube, Facebook, BlogSpot, Skype, and web quest in language learning.
Class divided into some group, and my group discuss about how to use Facebook in language teaching. Based on our discussion to learn language we must learn about speaking, writing, reading, and listening. In fact, Facebook can be used to all of that. The first, Teacher can upload video to Facebook for listening, and the students can give comment after they listening and watching the video. The second, teacher can ask the students to write story or other, and then the students must put it into Facebook. It is for writing. The third, teacher can put a story in Facebook and ask the students to read it and give comment. The fourth, now in Facebook there is a new application for chatting through web camera. It is called ChatVibes. The student can do ChatVibes with their language teacher, so the teacher can assess their students speaking.
I think we can create social networking for education and it is can make students interested to learn language. Students learn the technology faster than their teacher. So, the teacher must try to move more quickly than their students. Let’s become a sophisticatsed teacher to compensate for age.
With Differences, We Are Together

God created human with a wide range of differences. For example in our country, all citizens have variety of differences. It is begin from diverse ethnic, costumes, religion, racial, skin color, etc. But instead, with has a variety of differences that we must unite and live in harmony. With the varied differences we all certainly hope that we can respect one another. But it is not easy to be happening. The evidence from the past time until now is still just a riot because of the difference whether it’s a difference of skin color, religion, racial, or others.
According to sources obtained from a site, one of the riots that occurred in the past time in 1999s. It is happen in Ambon. This is happen as a result of differences in ethnic, cultural, racial, and religion. The incident resulted in many victims who died and cause material loss. The cases like that were still happening until now. Not long ago this happened due to differences in religion cases. The case is one of ITB’s scholars insult Papua’s ethnic in social networking.
Looking at these events, author is very grateful, it is because the author learns humanistic. According to the author’s view, humanistic can help us study the relationship between human, and then by learn humanistic we can learn respect for one another. Even less, the author will be a teacher. Certainly teacher should can be appreciate and respect to differences of ethnic, culture, racial, and religion. It is because teacher will be facing the students from diverse ethnic, religion, racial, and cultural. Beside it, a teacher should be fair to all of their students. It is mean that teacher should not discriminate against students. And then, the teacher should teach their students to become respect one another and the teacher should become a good role model for their students.
Author has experience met with another religion. It is happen when I was in junior high school. I has friend who is Christian. When we were talking inadvertently, we discuss about religion differences. One of my friend said based on her thinking that God have not children, but why her religion said the opposite. My friend who is Christian tries to make argument. The discussion last long enough. Each of us has the varieties argument. But after the event, we never discussed about it again. It is because we afraid there is a problem because of that. But despite that we still respect our religion and our belief each other. Based on my experience and notice to the cases that occur in my country, I think every human have the right to believe what he believed to be and we must respect each other about that. So, if it can do, I trust that we can live in harmony. Then, I hope I can do it after I learn humanistic study.

Technology Penetrated the World

Technological was development very rapid from age to age. It begins with usual facilities until now sophisticated facilities. Now technology was not strength again for almost all of people. I think almost all of communities in the world know about technology. In fact the children also know about technology. Many children know and play game online. Another fact, now social networking is being rapidly adopted by the people, like Facebook and Twitter. Technology was spread in all walks of life. Everything is easy with use technology.
Except that, now technology is already widely used for various fields of work. One of which is used in education. Education certainly did not want to be left by the use of technology. Many schools in the world included Indonesia used technology especially for teaching. Based on my experience when I school in junior high school and senior high school, my teacher used laptop and projector to explain some topic. Then, we used language laboratory to learn language. It is make me interesting. I think it is very important to use technology in language class.
In learning the language we learn writing, speaking, listening and reading. In my opinion it is can be studied with use technology. I think it is more effective if the teacher use technology in the class. It is because technology make interesting. Today many exercises that we can found on the internet to learn language. Then, use technology can change Indonesian people from “gaptek” (in bahasa) become hi-tech. Nevertheless, technology has disadvantages. If we use technology to excess, it is can make bad impact, especially children. For example, if use computer to overtime, it is can make eyes damage. So, just use the technology as needed.
E-Reflection 1: Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment
This is the firstly I learn about Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment. In the first meeting I learn about what an effective teacher is and what an effective teaching is. Before we learn about that, firstly my lecture asks us to discuss with friend who sit next to us. We discuss about who inspire us to become a teacher, what kind of teacher do you like and don’t like, and whose motivate us to become a teacher. I think it is an interested discussion. My friend tells about interested experiences with her teacher. I get some point from the discussion, especially about our experiences with our teacher in school before, the point that we can take good things from our teacher in school and we can throw away the bad things from them.
After we discuss, we learn about differences between effective teacher and effective teaching. Based on what I learn in the class and based on my opinion, to become effective teacher we should have good classroom management, we should have good time management, we should become a role model in class, we should have good to deliver knowledge to our students, etc.
Meanwhile, in my opinion to become effective teaching we should use 3 ways communication in class. It is mean that in class there are communication between teacher with students and students with students. Then, in class should not use Teacher Centered Learning (TCL) but used Student Centered Learning (SCL). In this case teacher just become a facilitator, so the students can critical thinking and can solve the problem about the lesson by their self. Beside it, the teacher should maintain the students to become conducive. I hope after I learn about principles of effective teaching and assessment in the first session, I can become an effective teacher and can do effective teaching especially to teach language.
